‘The Birds’

Sound Re-Design

For the second semester of my Masters in Music and Sound Design I took the module ‘Audiovisual Composition for Film, Games and Media. For the first assessment I had to complete a full sound re-design of an allocated film clip. The challenge of this sound re-design was that I had to use my own recorded sounds for everything. Therefore, I completed the foley, dialogue and external recordings all for this project. I believe the final result utilised successful experimentation with sound with an original orchestral score.

‘The Wonder of Air Travel’

This is long-form ambient composition completed for a ‘Writing to brief’ module during the third year of my undergraduate. The Brief required a soundscape that explores flight, fantasy and grief and was inspired by Musique Concrète and Brian Eno’s ‘Ambient 1’. My concept for the piece was an ambient composition that included voice samples on the history of aviation and references to flight within pop-culture. The piece is accompanied by a short film that consists of both historical footage and clips from films relating to flight in the ‘fantasy’ sense.

Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa Sound Re-Design

This is a sound re-design of a scene from the film Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa, which I completed for an audio post production module during the final year of my undergraduate. The assessment required me to re-create elements of sound design, SFX, Foley and record and edit all of my own ADR. This module helped to develop my understanding of the audio post production process films undergo. I found that within this clip my strengths lied heavily within the recording and editing of ADR as well as the mix, in which I utilised post production mixing techniques such as an M&E bus.

‘No Longer Masculine’

This is a binaural piece of music I created during the third year of my undergraduate for my module ‘Immersive Audio’. The module required us to create a immersive composition mixed either binaurally or in surround sound. The piece’s concept follows Mina Loy’s Feminist Manifesto and utilises production techniques such as granular synthesis to vocal samples to create ‘stutter’ effects. The piece is mixed binaurally and the ‘intimate’ sound of this mix technique highlighted the aesthetic of the piece.

‘Coven of Luna’ Showreel

‘Coven of Luna’ is a video game concept created for my second year undergraduate module ‘Music for Video Games’. To showcase both the Wwise project, in which we showcased all of the audio and sound design, and the original music I composed for the game I created a music showreel for the video game.

Novemeber 2023

‘Golden’ - Mix

During the final year of my undergraduate, I had the opportunity to show record producer Pete Smith at HomeWard Studios in Brighton. Pete Smith has over 20 years of experience in the Music Industry and has produced/engineered song for Stevie Wonder, The Police, Sting, Van Morrison and many more. The session consisted of recording drums, guitar, bass and vocals for a BIMM student/solo artist Max Adriaan. After the studio session I took away the stems and completed my own mix of the song, utilising relevant mix techniques to the R&B/Soul genre.

‘Pan’s Labyrinth’

This is a sound design and composition based project that I completed during the second year of my undergraduate. This was the final piece for the module ‘Sound and Design and Composing to Media’. The assessment required us to choose one of six clips and re-create the sound design, foley and score. The score was inspired by composer Danny Elfman as his style of composing compliments the dark-fantasy genre. A lot of the orchestral techniques found in his scores, such as high fast-paced string parts and ostinatos, were emulate within my own work. This piece of work helped to deeply develop my skills as both a composer and sound design.
